Trouble with your AC? So are you confused when you have to call AC services for repair? Here I have covered most possible situations that you might face in your day-to-day life.
Air conditioners are one of the most used appliances in our household which became part of our livelihood. It regulates the temperature in rooms if we set it based on our comfort levels.
Here are a few conditions you can identify on your own when you have to call AC repair services or not.
AC Not cooling the room:
If you are living in hot outdoor conditions and your air conditioner is running, but it’s not producing cool air or the air is not as cool as it should be, there may be a problem with the compressor or refrigerant levels.
Possible reasons:
- Compressor not working
- No refrigerant gas is available due to the leakage (which can be checked with a refrigerant leak detector)
Most of the compressor-related issues cannot be rectified at home by ourselves it’s better to call AC repair services if the issue is related to the compressor.
For the leakage of the refrigerant, we have to arrest the leakage if any, and fill the appropriate gas again which needs to be done by the repair services.
Note: The air conditioner will take 3 to 5 minutes to turn on its compressor based on the default timer set on as per the OEM.
Poor airflow:
Even though the compressor and fans in the Indoor unit and outdoor unit are running, if there are any leakages present in the Duck work/pipework you will not get enough air inside the room which needs to be cooled.
You can check the duct work if you can identify the leakage you can arrest the leakage yourself by sealing it. if it is a bigger leak or you cannot identify the leakage then you can ask any technical services nearby you.
Strange Noises:
Air conditioners contain rotating parts in both Indoor units and outdoor units. If you hear any banging, clanking, hissing, or squealing sounds from any of the parts, there may be a chance of mechanical damage inside these units. So you have to turn off the AC without further usage and contact services immediately.
Odd Odors:
Odd odors might come due to various reasons. This may be due to some different odors spread at the air intake of the AC. If the Air intake is located inside the room but you are still getting burned or smoke smell from the AC there is a high chance of Burned wire or any other part inside the AC. Then the AC needs to be disconnected from the Power supply and call repair services.
Leaking or Moisture:
If you have observed water leakage or moisture around the duct you need to check if there are any leakages on your roof/walls that are accumulating around the duct. If there are no leakages in your roof/walls you have to check the ductwork for any rainwater that might be accumulated in supply/return air ducts.
There are some cases of Air conditioner condensation drain blockage or refrigerant leakage which will cause leakages that you need to take support of repair services.
Frequent Cycling:
If your AC unit is turning on and off frequently, it may be struggling to maintain the desired temperature. AC will take a significant amount of time to maintain the temperature inside the room.
This could be due to various issues, including a malfunctioning thermostat or a problem with the compressor, which needs to be checked with repair services.
High Humidity: Your AC system should help control humidity levels. If you notice that your home feels excessively humid. Where you can feel the wetness on the walls, furniture, and plastic items that don’t absorb the water.
There might be an issue with your dehumidifier unit which needs to be addressed by servicing.
Increased Utility Bills:
A sudden spike in your utility bills might be for two reasons
- Most of the utility bills will follow the peak hour charges approach which if you use more on the peak usage hours, you might get more bills for that you have to balance your usage.
- If you are using your AC balanced like all your neighborhood But still getting higher amounts will be because of faulty inefficient parts inside AC which you need to check with services.
Thermostat Issues: If your thermostat is not responding or if there are discrepancies between the set temperature and the actual temperature in your home, it could signal a problem with the thermostat or the communication between the thermostat and the AC unit.
Age of the System: If your AC unit is old and has been in operation for a significant number of years, it may be more prone to breakdowns. Regular maintenance can help extend the lifespan, but eventually, older systems may need replacement.
Regular maintenance can help prevent some of these issues, but if you notice any of the above signs, it’s advisable to call a professional HVAC technician to assess and address the problem before it worsens.
